Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test
In addition to the credit requirements, a Literacy Test will be administered in the Grade 10 year; students must be successful on this test in order to obtain the OSSD. The Ministry of Education and Training has established policies for accommodations, deferrals and exemptions with respect to the test. Students, who commonly receive accommodations on tests and exams within the regular curriculum, including the use of a computer, and/or the provision of extra time, will generally be afforded such accommodations on the Literacy Test. Students who might benefit from a deferral of the test, including students who are registered in English as a Second Language courses, may have the taking of the test deferred to a later date. Finally, a student who is not working toward the completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma may be exempted from the test. Students who are unsuccessful on the Literacy Test will be afforded an opportunity to write the test in the following year, and will receive assistance preparing for the test. A Literacy Test course is available in Ontario, and students who have not successfully completed the test after two tries should take it; however, it is not taught at this school. Students would be directed to take the course at the Independent Learning Centre, and would receive some guidance from the Learning Resource Centre.
