The Middle Years Program (7-10) - MYP
The framework of the Middle Years Program is shown as a circular model. The students are placed at the centre of their own learning. The circular model emphasizes the importance of the 8 subject areas for a well-rounded education. Establishing a strong foundation of key skills and concepts in each of these disciplines is our priority in the MYP. This builds on what the School is already doing, and enables us to develop our curriculum and teaching in line with the internationally recognized guidelines of the IB Organization.
For students in Grades 7 to 10, the MYP combines academic excellence with opportunities to engage in the world. MYP students learn how to critically evaluate personal and global issues while developing their approach to learning. Within the context of three fundamental concepts – Holistic/Global education, Communication and Intercultural Awareness – students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to participate actively and responsibly in a changing world.
Three Fundamental Concepts that Underpin the MYP are:
Holistic / Global Education
The MYP seeks to increase a student’s awareness and understanding of both the separate identities of the various subject areas and their inter-relatedness. From this foundation, it aims to increase their perception of the problems of the real world and their ability to find solutions for them.
Communication
Language learning is emphasized as a tool for the acquisition of all knowledge. Effective written and oral expression enables the student both to fit into society by communicating with others, and to develop his/her/their individuality.
International Mindedness
The MYP encourages an international perspective by awakening an interest in the diverse cultures and attitudes of others, as well as an appreciation for the student’s unique heritage. Increasing knowledge of the common heritage of human beings helps foster intercultural awareness.
The teaching philosophy of the IB is to provide students with opportunities to learn about the interconnectedness of knowledge between the subject areas. In addition, The York School gives careful consideration to connecting what is discussed in the classroom to the world beyond our classroom walls.
The complexity of real life requires interdisciplinary perspectives that can help students:
address biases and consider diverse interpretations and points of view;
engage personal interest and increase motivation for learning;
broaden their awareness of circumstances that have personal impact;
develop critical and conceptual thinking skills by gathering and evaluating relevant data, analysing alternatives, considering potential consequences and drawing conclusions;
take action in ways that are age-appropriate
develop qualities that will enable them to take responsible actions to address global challenges when they are adults.
In order to support a student’s academic development, the MYP emphasizes skill development that helps students learn how to learn through Approaches to Learning skills. These skills are organized around the following categories: communication, social (collaboration), self-management, research and thinking. The purpose of teaching and learning these skills is to have students develop the self-knowledge and skills they need to enjoy a lifetime of learning.
The IB MYP provides a well-rounded, yet rigorous, framework in which to develop our curriculum. Courses at the Grade 9 and 10 level, although based on the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum guidelines, are also presented and assessed according to the dictates of the MYP.
The Personal Project
This is an independent piece of work that is intended to be the culmination of the student’s MYP experience. It is introduced at the beginning of Grade 10 and the report is to be completed in February. This project emphasizes the student’s independent research skills. In this way, it serves as an excellent preparation for the independent nature of learning required in IB DP (in Grades 11 and 12), as well as the DP’s Extended Essay. Students are encouraged to go beyond a traditional subject-based project and pursue an endeavour of personal interest when developing both their learning goal and product goal. The project may take the form of an essay, an artistic production or other form of expression, but it should be original to each student. The project’s focus will be decided in consultation with teachers. All MYP students attending The York School in Grade 10 are required to complete the Personal Project. Students are supervised throughout the process by their advisor.
