Mandatory Assessment Completion (MAC) and Workspace
At The York School, we understand that self-management is a crucial skill within the "Approaches to Learning" (ATL) framework. Repeated late submissions of assignments often indicate difficulties with organization, perfectionism, procrastination, and other challenges. Additionally, late submissions can disrupt our carefully planned Assessment Calendar, increase student stress, and negatively affect performance. The Mandatory Assessment Completion (MAC) policy aims to help students manage their time efficiently and complete their assignments on schedule.
Assignments:
All drafts and final summative assessments (assessment OF learning), including required DP coursework such as Internal Assessments and the Extended Essay.
Submission Platform:
Turnitin Assignment through Blackboard.
Student Responsibility:
Use the shared teacher/student Google Document for all assignments.
Submit assignments through Turnitin Assignment on Blackboard.
Students check in and out with reception for Attendance purposes.
Students who have a group work or assessment on the day of MAC are required to attend that class. No additional time will be granted to the MAC day.
Administrative Responsibility:
Check Blackboard at 8:30am.
Send appropriate infraction notifications for MAC to begin in Workspace at the start of Period 2 at the latest.
Teacher Responsibility:
Verify that student submissions are valid and completed in the shared Google Document by 12:30pm on the due date.
Provide comprehensive feedback on draft submissions only. Final submissions will be graded using the provided rubric without additional narration.
Terms:
Assignments created and submitted in any document other than a shared Google Document will not be graded and must be rewritten. This policy ensures teachers can track student progress and maintain academic integrity.
All summative assessments, including drafts, are due at 8:30am on the date indicated in the Assessment Calendar and must be submitted in the required format.
If a student fails to submit a draft or final summative assessment on time, an email will be sent to the student, their parents/guardians, and their advisor, indicating the late submission and requiring the student to attend Workspace starting at Period 2 at the latest. Students will remain in Workspace, or as directed by the Learning Strategist, until 4:00pm to complete the incomplete assessment.
The work completed by 4:00pm will be assessed for grading purposes.
If a student who has received an extension fails to complete the assessment by the new due date, the student will attend Workspace at the beginning of the day and remain there until 4:00pm to complete the assessment. All other terms will apply.
Students who have a group work or assessment on the day of MAC are required to attend that class. No additional time will be granted to the MAC day.
Extension Policy:
Students struggling to manage their schedules are encouraged to proactively speak with their advisor or the Learning Strategist for support with backward planning.
Extensions must be granted by the Vice Principals, who may consult with any of the following: parent, teacher, Learning Strategist, and/or advisor to determine the extension request.
All granted extensions will be centrally documented, and assessment calendars will be adjusted accordingly.
Students seeking an extension must make a request 48 hours before the due date. For assignments due on Monday, requests must be submitted by 8:30pm on Friday. No extension requests will be considered on weekends.
