Library

Student learning at The York School is enhanced by the availability of extensive resources. The York School Library is an excellent source for books on all subjects covered in the curriculum, as well as journals, files on specific topics, and videos. Students also have access to two public libraries in the immediate vicinity, including the Toronto Reference Library. Students in Grades 11 and 12 have access to books in the University of Toronto Robarts Library, but have no borrowing privileges.

Increasingly, the internet and specific subscribed services provided on the internet fulfill the students’ research needs. Increasingly, students use their laptops to connect wirelessly to the internet and Blackboard, our LibGuides website, to access a variety of online databases and encyclopedias and teacher-selected supplementary materials in order to fulfill their research needs.

We are excited to share with you the vital role our middle and senior school library plays in your child's academic journey and personal development. Far more than a traditional repository of books, our library serves as a dynamic learning and innovation centre designed to equip students with the critical thinking and research skills essential for success in the 21st century.

Guided Learning and Information Literacy

Our library is staffed by a professional librarian who serves as both educator and guide, helping students navigate the complex landscape of information in our digital age. Rather than simply directing students to resources, our librarian teaches them how to identify, evaluate, and analyze sources critically. This instruction is particularly crucial in today's information-rich environment, where students must learn to distinguish between credible sources and misinformation or disinformation. These skills extend far beyond the classroom, preparing your child to be a discerning consumer of information throughout their life.

Seamless Physical and Digital Access

Understanding that today's learners need flexible access to resources, we have created a comprehensive system that serves students both in-person and online. Students can visit our physical library space for collaborative work, research assistance, and access to our print collection. Simultaneously, they enjoy 24/7 digital access to library resources through their My York Links folder.

Comprehensive Digital Resources

Through the library tab in My York Links, students can:

  • Browse our online catalogue: Students can search our complete collection, check availability of physical materials, and place items on hold for convenient next-day pickup.

  • Access scholarly databases: Our LibGuides website provides students with access to various academic databases, enabling them to locate peer-reviewed articles and credible sources to support their assignments and projects.

  • Utilize our digital reading platform: Through Sora, students can borrow digital books and audiobooks, expanding their reading opportunities beyond our physical collection.

  • Master proper citation practices: We provide comprehensive guidance on MLA and APA citation formats, ensuring students develop strong academic integrity habits.

  • Discover new reading interests: Our curated reading lists and personalized recommendations help students explore new genres and topics that align with their interests and academic goals.

Supporting Academic Excellence

Every resource and service in our library is designed with your child's academic success in mind. Whether they are working on a research project, seeking sources for an Extended Essay, or simply looking to expand their reading horizons, our library provides the tools, guidance, and support necessary for intellectual growth and academic achievement.

We encourage you to discuss these resources with your child and to reach out if you have any questions about how our library can best support their learning journey.
