Middle School Homeroom Program
The Middle School Homeroom Program at The York School is designed to help students navigate the exciting and sometimes challenging transition into adolescence. Rooted in relationships and a strong culture of belonging, homeroom provides a consistent supportive space where students feel included, valued and challenged as they navigate their middle school journey.
Students meet with their homeroom class twice each day- from 8:25am - 9:05am in the morning and again from 3:20pm - 3:30pm in the afternoon. These daily touchpoints offer opportunities to build community, engage in meaningful discussion, and develop relationships with both peers and teachers. The program is developmentally responsive, meeting students where they are while encouraging them to grow with confidence and purpose. Homeroom teachers serve as a primary point of contact for students, families, and faculty, supporting social-emotional development, executive functioning, academic progress, and overall well-being.
In alignment with our school values: embrace curiosity, challenge yourself, and contribute to an inclusive community, and grounding in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP), the homeroom experience supports students in strengthening their Approaches to learning (ATL) skills. These skills are essential for success both in school and in life.
With a focus on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), the program supports students in developing:
Self-Awareness
Self-Management
Social Awareness
Relationship Skills
Responsible Decision Making
Students also build critical Executive Functioning (EF) skills such as:
Attention & Focus
Organization
Task Initiation
Planning and Prioritizing
Time Management
Communication and Reflection
Homeroom time may include current events, announcements, community circles, school-wide community events, and targeted skill-building activities. Our homeroom program ensures that students are equipped to thrive at The York School and beyond, ready to lead with curiosity, integrity and purpose.
